June Update
If we took all of the “greetings and farewells” from the letters of the Apostle Paul, what would we find? I started thinking about this in relation to our saying goodbye. I have not done the full study and scoured each example, but as I think over the example Paul provides, I think of some themes that bubble to the top. I am sure there are more, but I see Paul focusing on three things; giving thanks, sharing the longing heart he has for the people, and the sharing of foundational truths that he wants them to always remember. While I am not saying we are sharing Paul’s heart exactly, we are experiencing this feeling in a profound way. First, we must give thanks. Thanks for the sustaining grace of God and for all of the love that has been shared with us from our friends here in Jamaica. God has been good to us and we can’t find the right ways to fully express our gratitude. Also, we will deeply miss our friends and coworkers. Our hearts long for ways to be able to shrink the miles and continue these relationships, but just as Paul knew, the calling of God meant that the fellowship would be different. And third, our hearts have been bursting with a desire to see the foundational truths of our God indelibly marked on the hearts of the believers in Jamaica. As we considered our final chapel messages to the students, we wanted to leave them with a Pauline type treaty to remember the truths of our God. Because, we know that it is only through the grace of God that we can have the hope that these relationships and goodbyes are not final.
Our past month has been like nothing else we have experienced. While it has many similar characteristics to our time leaving the states and moving to Jamaica, it feels different. Similarly, we have experienced the profound joy of pursuing a new opportunity that we believe is right. But, this has been followed simultaneously with the deep sorrow that many of our relationships will be difficult to continue at the level that we wish. And, the thing that is different is the feeling that we know we are leaving work “on the table.” So, the combination of both the greater finality in the closure of relationships combined with a strong sense of work remaining to be done in Jamaica makes this transition different and difficult. But again, we don’t say that in any sense of despair, as we are excited and confident in the new work that the Lord has provided and in the Lord’s provision for the continuing of the work in Jamaica.
The details of our transition remain fuzzy, but are becoming clear. Lord willing, we will be flying on July 18th and will be hitting the ground on the run. After arriving back in the states we will be continuing work on determining our long-term location. This will be combined with some initial meetings as well as family gatherings. Therefore, after arriving in the states, we will be on the move for at least the first three weeks. We are looking forward to catching up with many of you and sharing in fellowship.
Our family is adjusting to everything well. The kids share our mixed emotions. They have been processing the idea of moving back. One time, they will loath the idea of moving and express a desire to just stay in Jamaica. Then, a little later, they will process the idea of Grandma’s house and cousins, then that changes everything. I think it will similarly take them time to grasp the ramifications of this move. Jamaica is all they know and they have adapted quite well, but we pray for God’s grace in filling the gaps of their heart in this move.
As we mentioned above, gratitude has been a side effect as we consider our move. And, a significant aspect of that gratitude is for all of your love, support, and prayers. There is no way for us to fully understand and comprehend the fullness of love shared with us over the past five years. Thank you so much and we pray that we can pass that blessing on in the future.

Claudine
Claudine has been a part of our family now for three years. Soon after Daisha was born, she began helping us everyday with the kids. She came as a student and helper and she has since become a friend and a daughter. Our hearts are torn, knowing our time here is short and our goodbyes are coming. Claudine has shown a genuine love and care for our children and a respect for our family. Likewise, our children have attached themselves to her. On occasion we've had opportunities to meet her family. This past Sunday we were so honored to be their guests. It was special for us to see where Claudine grew up, meet her Grandparents, and spend time with her family. We were touched by their love and generosity. It's a unique opportunity, when different culture and backgrounds combine, and we praise God for it!
Please pray for Claudine as she will no longer be with our family. We pray that she will continue to stay positive and seek God's direction in her life. We are hopeful she will find good employment this summer.

Blogging happens in the Margins
In regards to an update, we do not really know anything more. We have not bought tickets and we still dont know where we will land. But, our transition is off to a good start. The "goodbyes" have been hard and have been ongoing for the past 2 weeks. This week, the students and teachers will be leaving. What a huge goodbye! We were responsible for chapel duties this weekend. Our hearts exploded as we thought of trying to leave the students with strong resounding message of the cross. It is hard, but it is right.

High School Class Reunion
I am not who I was. I look back at high school with some fond memories and a fair measure of shame. My high school experience was better than that of 99% of the world. I must be thankful for great people, good memories, and a decent education. I know that puts me in the 1%. But, I was not who I should have been and for that I am sorry, it makes grateful for forgiveness. Not long into my freshmen year of college I realized that there was more to life than my experiences. It was at this time that I became a believer in Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. This changed everything! From this point on, my life took a new course. Through ICC and on to the University of Illinois, my journey took me beyond what I had planned. After graduation, I found myself living in Indiana and teaching at a small school for at-risk high school students. It was often with a fair measure of chagrin that I looked at my life behind a teacher's desk as I considered my years failing Ms. Stahl's math class or some ridiculous english class. The comedy then turned to a belly laugh as I took my 3 years of experience as a teacher and moved into the principals office. It was a great job and a great experience and I remain passionate about education. It was about the time that I became the Director of Education of that school that I was swept off my feet by the love of my life. We married in 2004 and soon welcomed our first son in 2005. After our second son was born in 2007, we felt the call of God to serve as missionaries overseas. This call has taken us to the deaf community on the island of Jamaica. We work at a school for the deaf in rural Jamaica and have experienced the profound grace of God living in a different culture. We have had two daughters born since being in Jamaica and we often can't believe we are now a family of 6. Life has not been easy or perfect, but we know that its a journey and we are living it in joy, learning how to love more completely. And, by the grace of God, the journey continues.......

Jamaica Update - April
Our parenting skills need some serious help! It is not uncommon for us to get to the end of our day absolutely beside ourselves. And, by “beside ourselves,” we literally mean that we can clearly see ourselves in two distinct ways. The Bible calls it spirit and flesh, but for the sake of this conversation, we will call it good parent and bad parent, or proactive and reactive, or loving and angry. After awhile, this tension continues to beat us up and we end up in the black and blue of depression. Over the past month, the contrast between our bad parenting and the perfect parenting of God as our heavenly father has become increasingly clear. When the bad parent rears its ugly head, we crumble in need of grace. Then, in the light of that grace, we a get renewed glimpse of our Father’s love for us. It is in understanding this love that we stand in awe knowing that our behavior towards Him is not far from the behavior in our children that sends us into bipolar mode. We know His love for us is consistent, compassionate, and faithful. We have been wrestling through these thoughts in prayer this month. In new ways, we have sensed the Father’s love and in spite of the ugliness of “bad parent,” we know His Fatherly care shaping us into His image.
April has been a monumental month, an intense month. April started with us moving to Montego Bay for a week. Our sending church was arriving for a week of ministry. They were here for the first week of April and it was a blessed week. The group was great and we spent the entirety of our time ministering at a local home for the infirmed. The ministry consisted of some heavy construction, some maintenance work, a lot of singing, and most importantly, simply loving the residents. The fellowship was sweet. The nursing home was ecstatic for the work that was completed and the residents really appreciated all of the love and attention.
After saying goodbye to the Leo team, we moved back up to Knockpatrick. We were still in the middle of a serious ride on the emotional roller coaster as we dealt with the hangover from the Leo team. But, the ride wasn’t over because that Sunday was Easter, a day of celebration. Then, on Easter Sunday evening, we had a farewell dinner as a team with the Huber family. On the next Tuesday, we said our final goodbyes as the Huber family moved back to the states. This turned the roller coaster ride into high gear as we will miss them so much. We have done a lot of life together with the Huber family over the past few years and it has been hard to see them move. But, at the same time, we trust God’s plan for their family and know that our relationship will continue over the miles.
The rest of the month, the roller coaster slowed down. We had a little bit of down time before we welcomed a team from Florida. We were blessed by the work and friendship of a team from Seffner Christian Academy. As the team wrapped up their work, we were graced by a visit from Keri’s parents. The time with Grandpa and Grandma Kaeb was great. We enjoyed hosting them for a few days at our apartment before we went together on a little vacation. As we have stated before, the distance between Grandparents and Grandkids continues to be one of our biggest struggles. But, at the same time, we have clearly witnessed God’s grace in closing that gap for our kids as we have witnessed their deep love and connection to their grandparents.
Throughout the month of April, we have really committed our plans to the Lord in prayer. This summer looks like it will be a time of transition. We are praying about moving out of our small apartment and we are asking the Lord to show us the way. We are trusting Him as our faithful Father as we do not know if this means a simple move into town or a big move into a different ministry. Thank you for praying with us and for your love and support.

Family coming to town!
Keri's parents flew to Jamaica on Tuesday. They took a couple of days for themselves and then we will meet them tomorrow. We are all very excited. The kids have been talking about all that they will do with Grandpa and Grandma. We will spend a few days with them at our home and then do a mini-vacation with them for a few days this coming week. We are looking forward to the fellowship and catching up!

A couple of more Leo team blessings
Every time our friend Janice comes, we are blessed. She is a favorite of our kids and we dont think she is half bad either. This trip, besides her joy and jokes, she joined in with the kids to dye Easter eggs. As the pictures so clearly explain, this was a highlight for the kids.

Farewell Hubers
Today, our teammates, the Hubers are flying back to the states to begin a transition to a different station of ministry. Please join us in praying for their travels and their transition. We have done a lot life together with this family and they will be profoundly missed. We are experiencing with them the unique paradox of emotions. We rejoice in God's plan in their life and mourn the changing of our relationship. To God be the Glory!

Then came the morning
Then came the morning
They all walked away, with nothing to say,
They'd just lost their dearest friend.
All that He said, now He was dead,
So this was the way it would end.
The dreams they had dreamed were not what they'd seemed,
Now that He was dead and gone.
The garden, the jail, the hammer, the nail,
How could a night be so long.
Then came the morning, night turned into day;
The stone was rolled away, hope rose with the dawn.
Then came the morning, shadows vanished before the sun,
Death had lost and life had won, for morning had come.
The angel, the star, the kings from afar,
The wedding, the water, the wine.
Now it was done, they'd taken her son,
Wasted before his time.
She knew it was true, she'd watched him die too,
She'd heard them call Him just a man,
But deep in her heart, she knew from the start,
Somehow her Son would live again.
Then came the morning, night turned into day;
The stone was rolled away, hope rose with the dawn.
Then came the morning, shadows vanished before the sun,
Death had lost and life had won, for morning had come.
Then came the morning, shadows vanished before the sun,
Death had lost and life had won, for morning had come.
Morning had come.

Leo Team 2012
The team at Deaf Bible Church in St. Elizabeth!
Wow! What a week! Hosting this team from our home church has been fantastic. The fellowship has been sweet and the ministry completed has been great. The team had a big task. They were doing some hard concrete work, they were ministering to the residents, they were teaching the children in the community, and also doing some fix-it jobs for the infirmary. So, everyday, 5 major tasks were running simultaneously and they met every challenge. On Tuesday, the kids worked like dogs and did a great job pouring cement. We then mapped out our next two days and had the finish line in sight. But, we got to the infirmary on Wednesday and they asked if we could make the patio bigger. This was no small task, but the met the challenge and completed the task as requested. Anyways, there are many stories but the pictures will tell the better tale. Please click here to see some pictures of the week.

Simply Grilling - a book review

I love grilling. The confluence of smell, anticipation, and aura are the perfect blend. Therefore, I also love learning about grilling as well. That is why I am reviewing, “Simply Grilling” by Jennifer Chandler. As is similar to other grilling books, “Simply Grilling,” starts with general information about grilling, Charcoal vs. Gas, Direct vs. Indirect, and more general theory. This was good stuff, not necessarily unique, but just good information. Then, the recipes, wow. The recipes section is very nicely formatted. The recipes are “tabbed.” The tabs are for whether the recipe can be easily varied, marinated, done ahead, grilled inside, etc. The recipes look good and I love the simple approach. I have gone through the book and “dog-eared” about half of the recipes. I am excited to use both the recipes as well as the ideas on our grill. Whether its taste combinations, methods for grilling, or ways to make grilling simpler, sometimes a book like this is needed to spur the mind to think outside the box. “Simply grilling” is a nice combination of all of the above and it is packaged in a beautiful book with stunning pictures. We look forward to putting these ideas into practice and expanding our grilling repertoire in a simple but delicious way.

Leo Team
We have had a great couple of days. The team arrived Saturday afternoon. They were welcomed to Jamaica by an especially long line at immigration. But, after a couple of hours, they made it through and the rest of the day was spent getting to CCCD and getting oriented. Sunday morning, the group was up early and headed off to Church in St. Elizabeth. The team visited Deaf Bible Church. So, a 3 hour drive across the countryside was enjoyed by all. The church service was great. After church, the team enjoyed fellowship for a while, the church served them a lunch, and then we were back on the road to Montego Bay. Monday morning, up again and off to the St. James Infirmary for work. The team dove right into the work and with the residents. Serving in unity is a profound joy!

Daddy's Girl
It all started one sunny day in June of 2009, and he's never been the same since. It's amazing the influence such a little girl can have on such a big guy! Daisha Leigh has become her Daddy's princess. She's already convinced 100% that "Daddy's my man," and refuses to close her eyes at night till she has squealed from the tackles of her dad. And her Daddy, he often adjusts his plans for the day around the whims of this little 2 year old bundle. As her mom, I love watching their relationship grow. We pray that she will always be won by the love of her father, and by this understand that she is so precious in her heavenly Father's eyes!

February Update
We must believe that the Gospel is enough. It must be the answer. If we cannot reconcile the Gospel as being the answer for all “making right” in the world, the guilt will kill us. The needs of the world are absolutely overwhelming. This message keeps resonating back to us again and again. The story often goes like this, when faced with the needs of the world, the level of guilt we feel demands a response. Then, because this guilt is born more out of shame for our blessings rather than compassion regarding the consequences of sin, we respond in the flesh rather than the Spirit. Our response is our best effort to bring aid to the situation in a way that will provide comfort to our guilt. This will lead down the wrong road every time. The response of our flesh will always lead to problems and the response of our flesh to suffering will likewise lead to more problems. Therefore, we must believe that the Gospel is the answer. We must believe that our response must copy the response of Jesus. We must believe that the answer is in true “Com-passion,” the true “suffering- with” as Christ suffered with us. That is the Gospel, God’s story and plan of reconciliation of His wayward people back to Himself through the passion of the Cross. We must start here or our helping will only serve to hurt.
February has been a significant month. At the beginning of February, our teammates Chad and Pam Huber, announced that they were moving back to the states. This was profound for us in many ways. They have been great teammates for the past 4 years and it is hard to see them preparing to leave Jamaica. But, we trust God’s leading in their lives. The Hubers have done great work on behalf of Apostolic Christian World Relief and the Jamaica Deaf Village. Their love and sacrifice have been a testimony to our family. Not all has gone as envisioned for the Hubers, but their steadfast trust in His plan has refreshed our hearts. Our circumstances have been very similar to the Hubers and we are trying to learn all we can as they walk through this transition. Please pray for them as they transition to a new phase in life.
In early February, while newly processing the idea of the Huber’s leaving, our support team came for a visit. This was a 5 day extravaganza of meetings. We visited many ministries around Jamaica and we also spent a lot of time focusing on our vision for the future in Jamaica. It was a very blessed week of fellowship and planning. The remainder of February was spent living life, but not in any normal sense. The Lord challenged us and stretched us through another unique set of circumstances involving two friends in our lives. These situations reawakened us to the absolutely destructive power of sin. I don’t know how and why we forget, but our hearts become calloused. While not situations that we can specifically explain, we pray that the light of our Lord shined through us in these dark situations. And, we continue to pray for soft hearts that remain malleable in His hands.
The experiences alluded to above were good for our soul. We continue to seek Him in our ministry, marriage, relationships, and parenting. The understanding of our need for sustaining grace continues to grow. Drew is more than half way through his first grade year and continues to love learning. Truitt continues being Daisha’s worst nightmare and best friend. Daisha, when not fighting with her older brother, continues to wow us with her little “girly” personality. And,, Danae continues her bipolar approach to life which results in either adorable smiles or fussy crying. Keri and I continue to celebrate life together with a love that continues to grow deeper. Again, we walk by grace and give thanks for all of your love and support.

Called to Controversy (by Ruth Rosen) - A book review

Called to Controversy is a book about Moishe Rosen, the founder of Jews for Jesus. The book is an honest look at Moishe from his youth through his leadership of the foremost mission organization to Jewish people. The book detailed Moishe’s early life, conversion, educational journey, early ministry, and then the founding of Jews for Jesus. I really appreciated the authentic approach of this biography. There was no sense in which the book felt like a “rose-colored” eulogy, but conversely, it felt like an honest summary of a man passionate about Jewish evangelism. Moishe was pictured as a man of God committed to the cause, but not without his flaws. This approach to biography was refreshing and offered a more realistic look at ministry and organizational leadership. While there were times that I wish the book gave a clearer picture of what and how Moishe taught the Bible, the book did give a detailed look at the inner workings of Jews for Jesus as an organization. The passion and commitment came through clearly and the book concluded with reflections back across Moishe’s life. The coverage of the time after Moishe’s retirement was especially insightful as the author included many of Moishe’s introspections of his own life and ministry. Ultimately, Moishe’s commitment to preaching the Good News to the Jewish people shined through this book and ministered to me as a significant encouragement. I think this little poem written by Moishe most succinctly summarizes the heart of the book. “Our love cannot preserve itself nor our rightness last. O Lord, love us and we shall be loved and love. Keep us right till we are right with you.”

For Frau Lau
Check out the picture of these two guys below. Do you see any resemblance? I dare say they could be twins and come to find out they are very close in age with profoundly similar life stories. Check out these profound similarities.
1. Same last name
2. Both of German Heritage
3. Both worked for IBM
4. Both worked in computers all their life

And, that is where the similarities stop. The guy on top is named Hasso Plattner and the guy on the bottom is named James Plattner, my dad. Their differences begin with the fact that Hasso is worth an estimated 7.2 Billion dollars and comes in on Forbes richest people in the world list at #127. But, despite the marginal difference in net worth, I am "banking" on the fact that Hasso may be a long lost uncle.

Leap day thoughts
2. Also, I heard again today that the Bible says "Fear not" 366 times. I have not checked that out to see if it is true, but I do know that His grace is sufficient to cover my fears every day of the year. And, for a fearful person, the thought of leap day being covered is extra encouraging.
3. I do not know anybody who was born on February 29th.

Meetings? Blessings?
We were extremely blessed this past week to host our JOC (Jamaica Organizational Committee) from the States. The week consisted of traveling to most of our ministries on the island where our church sends material aid as well as meetings, meetings, fellowship, and more meetings. It was an exhausting week for all of us, but it was blessed. Our ministry to the deaf of Jamaica is only possible through the support we've received from this group. Our sending organization, "Apostolic Christian World Relief" is doing lots of growing. You should click on the link, check them out, and then sign up for the email updates to stay current. Anyways, the "Jamaica Organizational Committee" is some of the fruit of this growth and is set up to support all of the work in Jamaica. This group of three brothers has come alongside us in very real and practical ways over the past year. We are very thankful for their hearts for the Deaf of Jamaica.Monday, February 20, 2012
January update
January 2012 Plattner Family Update
It’s the middle of February and I cant think of any kind of intro to our update. I typically try for a thoughtful or quippy intro but time has got the best of me. Also, it is our best intention to write meaningful content every month for our accountability to those who care and give such wonderful support. But, with no intro and poor content, we acknowledge sending this update out as a mater of discipline and not delight. So, here is our update for the month of January in its fully sorry state.
January was full. We flew back to the island on the 3rd and picked up our first team on the 7th. The team was great and we enjoyed the fellowship of our friends from Little Rock, Arkansas. The next week was a board meeting. This means lots of traveling and lots of hosting as board members fly in for the meetings. The board members flew out just as we welcomed our second team of the year. This team comes every year from Dayton, Ohio. The team did some great work in the school and with our staff. And, in a blink, our January was gone.
Our family continues to experience profound blessing. Between our fits of complaining and extreme selfishness, we stop and marvel at God’s grace on our lives. From our children’s growth, to our marriage, to our opportunities to minister, we give thanks. We have fellowshipped with some wonderful people and have been blessed by the Body of Christ. Thank you so much for your ongoing support of our family.
Love,
Kirk, Keri, Drew, Truitt, Daisha, and Danae
